A lecture on averages??? Surely anything but that would make a better topic. However, despite a simple concept, averages can be—and often are—downright deceptive. In the right hands, they can distort the truth and subvert our preconceptions, moving us into numerical blind alleys that lie off the beaten path of conventional wisdom. Is the lowly average as unremarkable and out-and-out average as it portends to be… or is it, perhaps, anything but?
