Wahkohtowin Circle refers to a gathering rooted in kinship principles – a space for sharing, learning, healing, or decision-making that honours the bonds between individuals, generations, and nature. Wahkohtowin is a Cree word that broadly means “kinship” or “the state of being related.” It reflects a deeply rooted Indigenous view that emphasizes the interconnectedness of all beings – people, animals, the land, and spirit. In Cree culture, Wahkohtowin is more than just family ties – it is a way of living that guides how we relate to one another and our responsibilities to our relatives. It speaks to mutual respect, balance, and care. Wahkohtowin is a word from the Plains Cree dialect, also used in Woodland Cree and understood across various Cree-speaking communities, especially in central and northern Alberta and Saskatchewan.
