Henna art, also known as mehndi, has a rich cultural history, with ties to many Middle Eastern, Asian and North African cultures. It is created using a paste made from the henna plant, and while many know it today for it’s artistic uses, henna was originally used to combat heat due to its natural cooling properties, as well as for medicinal purposes. It was after it was discovered to leave a stain on the skin that it was used for decorative purposes.
In many different cultures, Mehndi is used for various special occasions like birthdays, weddings, and celebratory holidays. The designs vary based on the culture, and the stains can be found in a variety of colours, such as black, browns, and blues, which can be made mixing other plants and herbs when making the henna paste.
Join the Multicultural Association of Wood Buffalo for a free Henna-Inspired Tote Bag workshop where you will get the opportunity to learn different techniques and patterns used in henna art, and create your own custom tote-bag. By attending this workshop, participants will also be entered to win a gift basket that will include a unique item related to the cultural background of this workshop’s facilitator!
